	History

	Discovered by the pioneering prospector Auguste Robert, otherwise known as "French Bob", the Pioneer Reef was the very first gold reef founded at what became known as "the Barberton Goldfields." Mining was primitive and dangerous, the pioneers continued to seek fortunes with undaunted spirit, endured untold hardships, suffered disappointments and disasters, but, encouraged by a sprinkling of success and unexpected triumphs, carried on.

		The region is so abundant in gold deposits that even today, a gold panning excursion can yield a wealth of golden flakes for the modern visitor.

	Now you get the unique opportunity to relive the pioneering spirit of discovering gold. Danny, from the South African Gold Panning Association, will assist you in your find of golden flakes in Alluvial Creek and prepare your momento with your find while you enjoy the underground tour.

	Equipped with gumboots and hard hat, the original discovery reef are explored with a tour through the Legendary Pioneer Mine.

		Here one can experience the progression from the conventional way of mining to more modern mining methods. The hillside of gold-bearing quarts was being worked and gold won as early as 1883.

	After your gold panning and underground experience, cool off with a swim or just relax at the pool of the Pioneer Restaurant.




		The facility is equipped for the whole family and includes a swimming pool, tennis court, playground for the kids, braai area, pool tables, darts, etc.
